Design is more than just about creating visually appealing products. It's about crafting experiences that engage and delight users on a deeper level. That's where haptic design comes in – the art and science of designing for the sense of touch. From a non-visual point of view, it is a feeling of beauty based on a universal sensory common ground for all.

By incorporating haptic design principles into your products or experiences, you can create a more engaging and memorable experience for your users intuitively. For example, think of the satisfying "click" you feel when typing on a mechanical keyboard or the tactile sensation of turning a physical knob to adjust the volume on a stereo.

Why Touch?

Our life and creative works are dominated by vision, but the desire for physical embodiment was always needed, especially in this screen age. The sense of touch is one of the most undervalued senses but is essential to our user experience and memories for all. The Haptic Design workshop takes tactile experience as the main creative source instead of vision. It will awaken your sensitivity and understanding towards yourself and communicate with others.

For Who?

The workshop is open to participants working with creative professionals who are aware of the embodiment, user experience, communication and inclusivity. This workshop is the perfect opportunity to develop a sensory alternative to understanding yourself and the clients.

About Boey Wang

Boey Wang is a leading designer specialising in designing from a sense of touch. In order to challenge the cliche of inclusive design, Boey took a down-to-earth approach and developed a unique Haptic Design method to create functions, shapes, and aesthetics from non-visual perspectives for all. He dedicated himself to spreading the methods into art and design education and also to the creative field to make it more inclusive.

His representative work, ‘Haptics of Cooking’ is a series of haptic cooking tools both for users who are visually impaired and able to see. The users could navigate through the cooking process intuitively and safely without seeing. It creates a sensory common ground for all. The project has won 15 top design awards internationally, such as Double IF Design Talent Award and the James Dyson Award, and has been exhibited around the world. He was supported by Talent Development Program from Creative Industry, the Netherlands. His practice was selected by Dutch Design Foundation as an example of future Dutch Design during Dutch Design Week 2022.
